Surprisingly, they sell to a very specialized crowd, and have limited sales every year. The recent R3A, (or even R2A), also have an aperture priority mode.

No TTL metering, but I’ve never had an issue with any auto flashes, (thyristor) Both have manual exposure.

It flash syncs at 1/125 on either the hot-shoe or PC terminal. Shutter speeds range from 1 to 1/2000s and bulb (B), which is pretty good. The Voigtländer Bessas have a double focal plane shutter with two sets of curtains. There are actually people who prefer other cameras.ĭavid Bailey and his Voigtländer 1/125 Sync I’m sure he’s not trying to save a few pence. See the pic of David Bailey and his Voigtländer. And if you don’t normally shoot wide open all the time, I doubt you could tell the difference. They even come in both Single Coated and Multi-Coated varieties. However, even the Canon rangefinders used by such luminaries as William Eggleston, will give the Leicas a run for their money. Some say they don’t mind buying a “cheaper” M mount camera, as long as they’re using Leica glass. But most people would be extremely happy. But to be honest, they’re no Leicas, or even Zeiss. But are Leicas really worth almost three-four times as much? And since Cosina now owns the name Voigtländer, there is really nothing German about them. A Leica is a Leica, and in a class of its own. Leica lenses are worth the price, just as everything that is created to the highest standard is.Some say the Voigtländer Bessa R3,…both A and M, are a poor man’s Leica. Huge variations in price are the result of the collector markets, speeds of lenses that make them attractive to professionals who use them in low light, supply and demand, internet propaganda, Erwin Puts or whomever says the best lens is X and everyone has to have it. Your own knowledge of latin will tell you what these words actually mean. They are cheaper, smaller and lighter than their faster brothers and by far the easiest to carry.Įlmar is F/4 and are great lenses as well.

Though not all Summicrons are small.Įlmarit is F/2.8 and I believe they provide the best image qualities wide open but that's just my opinion. Summicron is F/2 and the most practical to carry on an everyday, everywhere basis which is mostly the point of having and using the Leica. Still they are useful for narrow depth of field. Summilux is F1.4 and makes low light color photography possible, but I say "Yuck" to low light color. Good luck handholding at F/1 and enjoy carrying that behemoth around. Noctili are completely unnecessary but I do think the out of focus areas look good.

Noctilux is basically an F/1 lens, there are F/1.2, F/1 and F/0.95 varieties. The names you asked about are simply trade names that Leica uses to describe the speed of the lenses

A persons ability to use them to their full capability varies wildly. The amount of ridiculousness available on the internet is staggering and for the most part completely pointless in the pursuit of creating worthwhile images. The only way to understand them is to buy them and use them. That said, you will ne'er be able to tell anything by looking at a computer monitor and thus all your research is for naught. And within the Leica lineup of lenses each lens in a focal length has a different character. A camera is a paintbrush, there are many types to accomplish different strokes.
